Brent Model IE

out of 5 stars) - Traditional 3 legged design with solid steel construction and
ample plastic covered surfaces. Industry leading splash pan simply
will not leak. Modular control with silencing technology makes for a
very smooth wheel. V-belt drive with automatic spring tensioner keeps
eliminates belt play. 12 " cast aluminum wheel head on double row ball
bearings. Large, heavy duty DC motor and control. A solid,
quiet, and reliable wheel with a long heritage of quality and performance.
Legs are removable for ease or portability.
Clay Boss by Creative
Industries - (2 out of 5 stars) - With a marketed horsepower advantage,
and roughly $100 price premium over the Brent IE, the Clay Boss should prove
to be a better wheel. In our real world studio tests, we found that
the Brent IE handled every task that we asked of it and the Clay Boss.
Though the motor on the IE is 1/3HP, it is still physically larger than the
motor of the "1/2HP" Clay Boss. The Brent splash pan is superior in
feel, depth, splash containment, and ease of use. The Clay Boss lacks
an automatic belt tensioner to take up the belt slack as the wheel ages.
Artista by Creative Industries -
(1 out of 5 stars) - Table top
form factor. The Artista lacks the convenience of a foot pedal for
hands free wheel speed control. It tends to bog down easily when asked
to center the clay that its specifications claim. We found that table
top throwing is somewhat hard on the back as it puts the potter in a
somewhat unnatural throwing position. When pushed, the IE handles the
load better. We also prefer the deep and wide Brent Splash pan.
Both wheels are portable, with the Artista being easier to handle as a
single unit. The legs can removed from the Brent IE, lending to its
portability. We preferred the large work surface of the Brent IE; it
has many places to place your tools, buckets, sponges, etc.
