Indian Clay No. 67

Dry only

AMACOŽ Indian Red Clay No. 67 is a favorite for colorful earthenware pottery. This natural clay is supplied in dry and moist form for modeling and is a rich red color before and after firing. It is an excellent plastic clay for all hand methods of modeling: slab, push and pull, coil, sculpture, and wheel throwing. Amaco? No. 67 is available in de-aired moist or airfloated dry formulas.

Many red clays tend to slump and warp at rather low temperatures. This disadvantage is eliminated by using AMACOŽ Indian Red Clay No. 67 with a wide firing range of Cone 06-02 (1855°-2052°F, 1013°-1122°C). For best results bisque fire to Cone 04 (1971°F, 1077°C). At Cone 06-05 (1855°-1911°F, 1013°-1044°C), recommended for glaze firing, there is a very wide selection of AMACOŽ glazes. At Cone 06 shrinkage is 7% and absorption 11.7%; at Cone 02 shrinkage is 13%, absorption 9.2%.

Colored transparent AMACOŽ LG Gloss Glazes blend with the red clay to produce a third color. AMACOŽ LT Alligator glazes tend to flow from the edges and high spots revealing the rich red color where the glaze is thin. Over the red clay, AMACOŽ Opalescent Glazes develop their greatest iridescence and texture.

No. 67 is also available in liquid form for casting (see "Slips/Supplies") or you can make slip from No. 67-D. Determine quantity of dry clay to be used. Weigh out water, 45% of the weight of the clay. Add .64% (clay weight) AMACOŽ N Brand Sodium Silicate, 0.5% Barium Sulfate and 0.14% Soda Ash to the water. The dry clay may then be slowly stirred into the water, mixing thoroughly without lumps. The resulting slip should be aged at least 24 hours before using.
