Terra Cotta
Clay No. 77
AMACOŽ Terra Cotta Clay No. 77 is a mixture of finely ground clays,
medium ground clays, and grog. This formula has been revised to make it
more forgiving. It is excellent for throwing large pieces, hand building
of any size, even large outdoor sculptures, without the fear of
slumping. It is also an ideal body for making tiles. Tiles will fire
straight without warping. No. 77 is available in de-aired moist form
only.
AMACOŽ Terra Cotta Clay No. 77 can be abused considerably. Because of
its coarse nature, air that may be trapped is easily released usually
without any problem, although we still recommend caution in hand
building in order not to trap air. It can also be used as a Red Raku
body. Large pieces may be reduced without the fear of cracking due to
shock.
AMACOŽ Terra Cotta Clay No. 77 has a wide firing range from cone 05 to 5
(1911°-2205°F, 1044°-1207°C). At Cone 04 the clay is terra cotta color
with shrinkage of 6.75% and absorption 9%. At Cone 5, the clay is rich
red-brown with shrinkage 10.5% and absorption 0.9%.
Because of the wide firing range, any of the AMACOŽ glazes can be used
on this clay and all of the AMACOŽ decorating colors are suitable. When
glazed inside, indoor planters are practical and attractive and the
outside surface may be partially glazed or left unglazed. Rough
textured, unglazed sculpture is often preferred.
Exceptional dramatic effects can be achieved when using certain amacoŽ
glazes in Raku over Clay Formula No. 77, some of which are: LG-25, F-47,
DG-25, O-26, L-511 and LT-144. The high concentration of iron oxide in
this clay body helps intensify the lusters that are produced during
reduction. Transparent glazes that do not produce lusters in reduction,
like some of the CR-Crackle Series, will be influenced by the dark color
of the body and produce deep warm shades of their color.
