Versa Clay No. 20
As the name implies, Versa Clay No. 20 is extremely versatile with many
uses for the ceramist and potter. It is available in de-aired moist form
only.
The extremely plastic quality of Versa Clay lends itself to all types of
hand building and wheel throwing. Even the most delicate hand-formed
ceramic flowers may be shaped paper-thin without cracking. No. 20 clay
may be reworked and shaped much longer than other clays. It can also be
press molded.
Versa Clay is recommended to be fired at Cone 06-04 (1855°-1971°F,
1013°-1077°C), but pieces can be fired as high as Cone 7 (2295°F,
1257°C). At Cone 04, shrinkage is 6.4%, absorption 14.6% and the bisque
is bright white. At Cone 02 shrinkage is 6.1%, absorption 13.6% and
bisque is cream buff. If fired over recommended temperature, thorough
testing should be done to establish a good fit between clay and glazes.
Low-fire glazes and decorating colors retain true color and brightness
when used on Versa Clay. Some Cone 5 AMACOŽ glazes may also be used with
No. 20's cream buff color in high fire.
