White Stoneware
Clay No. 38
This stoneware clay is formulated from choice clays for plasticity and
whiteness, plus fire-clay to give it more body. It is available in
de-aired moist form only.
Excellent for throwing, slab rolling and hand modeling, AmacoŽ No. 38
has greatly improved plasticity, a better fit at Cone 5 and makes an
excellent Cone 10 stoneware. It contains no grog, yet has the strength
for throwing large pieces.
No. 38 is recommended to be fired from Cone 5 to Cone 10 (2205°-2381°F,
1207°-1305°C). At Cone 5, shrinkage is 13% and absorption is 7%. At Cone
10 the bisque fires white in oxidation and gray in reduction, both
delicately peppered with darker gray spots. At Cone 10, shrinkage is 15%
and absorption is 1.4%.
Because of No. 38's white color, all underglazes and engobes will show
up better with little distortion of color. Also, any of AMACO's High
Fire Glazes can be used. This clay body is also good for use with glazes
that fire up to Cone 10, in both oxidation and reduction.
